FUTURE SOUNDS UPDATES

SAN FRANCISCO TONIGHT @ THE INDEPENDENT
A great bill???? Worth every dime of that $13....Here's why:
A). BONDE DO ROLE - Love this crew from Brazil!

BROOKLYN TONIGHT: DIRTY PROJECTORS + NUMBERS & LETTERS
I love THE DIRTY PROJECTORS (FS14) and their new CD - Rise Above!
A new act that's worth checking out for some authentic feeling americana/folk is NUMBERS & LETTERS. With songs crafted around a grandmother and the South, it's refreshing to hear something that actually comes from somewhere genuine. I love this track, 'Wading' (mp3)

What looks to be a great festival of music and film and art is happening this weekend in LA called SWERVEFEST - lots of great bands we love are playing:

So many of the best new LA based bands under one roof (bless you Liz) and you know a HellYa! party is a good one:

DECISIONS DECISIONS DECISIONS - LIVE IN LA TONIGHT

Damn if it isn't a great night of music in Los Angeles tonight to check out. It'll have to be a game time decision on the call for this group......

EDITORS (FS18) + BIFFY CLYRO + RA RA RIOT @ THE WILTERN
OR

THE MOVIES (FS08) + THE HAPPY HALLOWS @ THE ECHO

OR
GRAM RABBIT (FS14) + THE SPORES @ SPACELAND

The cool part about the Spaceland show is that along with everyone's favorite freaks, GRAM RABBIT, you get a chance to hear the new songs from THE SPORES, someone I've been meaning to blog about for awhile now since I was handed their excellent new release. If you haven't heard them before, get over to their site and listen to their 'doom pop'. A full length is being scheduled to drop soon on SideCho Records.

FUTURE SOUNDS 'THE TOUR' TAB IS LIVE

Check out the new 'THE TOUR' tab in the navigation above for a full-on feast of Future Sounds Tour info, pictures, videos, message boards, etc. Hey, our tour got mentioned today in HITS.

In other news, the UK act, OK TOKYO that we like so much, are self-releasing only 99 copies of their The Sums / Electro Metro CD available for pre-order through the band's official site at www.oktokyo.co.uk.

According to their email blast, the CD features 2 tracks, "
Sums" which is the first ever OK Tokyo track and is a dirty indie / sleazy rock anthem, and "Electro Metro" is a pop ridden / filth funk tribute to everything that is wrong with the world.

Check it out: The BBC did a nice feature on this - HERE.

In Arizona tonight, DUST & BLOOD are set to play at ANDERSON'S FIFTH ESTATE for a warm up show for EDGEFEST.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE:
CONSTANTINES, a band I think is truly important and not to be confused with that American Idol goon, have signed with ARTS & CRAFTS Records. Another score for A&C, however on a sad note, DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS (FS08) have called it quits.

EDITORS (FS18) perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tonight, Friday, September 21st on NBC at 11:30pm/10:30c. Damn, seems like yesterday we had them on Future Sounds as a demo, now they're all Jay Leno and shit. Congrats!

Hopefully you remember THAO NGUYEN from Future Sounds 25, well her new material produced by Tucker Martine is amazing and for all of you NYC listers, she'll be out East playing with her band THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN at 9 PM this Sunday the 23rd at Living Room in NYC.

NEW SPANKROCK: BLACK BETTY & SANTOGOLD

If you haven't seen the cover art for the new SPANK ROCK yet, here it is in all it's 'Baby's got back' meets 2 LIVE CREW glory. Spank Rock were smart enough to sign with Downtown Records, and now I see they were brilliant in that they got KUDU's BLACK BETTY and SANTOGOLD to put vocals down on their track, "Bootay!"(mp3) - thanks to Missingtoof.com. Turn up the bass!

NYLES LANNON - YEASAYER

Released today on Badman Recordings - NYLES LANNON's 'Pressure'. If you haven't experienced the dreamy world of n.l, then you really need to investigate this. An amazing guitarist in his own right, Nyles' solo records are filled with beauty and lightness and songs that are sometimes part SIMON & GARFUNKEL and other times AIR. This record he really adds guitar like never before, and this is a sleeper album that is going to creep up on people.
Check out 'Next Obsession' (mp3) or 'Hesitation' (mp3).

Nyles and his band are on the road, check them out:

9/18 - SEATTLE, WA - Sunset Room w/The Only Children, This Blinding Light, 9pm

I had been reading about YEASAYER for some time, and finally received the CD, 'All Hour Cymbals' for a listen. I generally like everything that Monitor Records has anything to do with, but it immediately struck me as something very different, and even in describing it I won't do it justice. This is such a deep and rich offering that it might take part of the record before you realize you can't categorize it, and then momentum builds and you wish you never had to categorize music. There are moments where I hear a 'Tusk'-era FLEETWOOD MAC, while at times I can see ARCADE FIRE fans clamoring for this.
My favorite track is the incredible,
"2080" (mp3).

SHHH!!! FILM SCHOOL SECRET SHOW AT THE HEMLOCK TONIGHT

After crushing their set at the TREASURE ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL last night, FILM SCHOOL are playing a now-not-so-secret show at THE HEMLOCK tonight at 9PM. As an extra special treat, THE BLACKS, a band who's EP has been killing me, play right before them at 8PM. Get there early if you want to be able to fit in that room.

TONIGHT IN LA: THE BOYS CLUB

My girls, Mollie and Heather, are putting on a party tonight, and getting there early will get you a peak at the terrific BLACKMARKET at 8pm at THE DERBY. Only $2.

So people are finally catching up in the US to the very talented SCOTT MATTHEWS and his track 'Elusive' which we featured on FS25 in December. YAHOO'S WHO'S NEXT now is running the song in their 'Users Choice" contest.

RICHARD HAWLEY'
s digital only release of 'Tonight The Streets Are Ours" single is out in the US this week and available on Itunes.
The Tracklisting is:

1. Tonight the Streets Are Ours

2. Vickers Road

3. I Sleep Alone (Live At Sheffield City Hall)

4. Coming Home (Live At Sheffield City Hall)

In the bad news department, I just read that MOHAIR has decided to break up. Great band, good guys, best of luck!

FS27's SONICFLYER had this great live review on GIGWISE:

"Next up were the hotly tipped Sonicflyer who captured hearts and blew the cobwebs off of the expectant crowd with huge soundscapes and a sound that will surely see them snapped up very soon. The Siberian brother and sister combo's songwriting was a breath of fresh air, as accompanied by their bass player and guitarist, Sonicflyer should by rights be headlining their own shows as the sound emanating from the stage was absolutely stunning. Think of a dazed Frente! With a dash of Kwoon and a pinch of Sigur Ros and you're halfway there. Shoegaze guitar lines with punchy choruses and an ethereal songstress with a penchant for late 90's indie became a winning combination as Sonicflyer soared, giving the gig the pick up it needed before our Los Angeles heroes took the stage. Brilliant is an understatement."

FS26 featured artists, THE DUDES, will be featured on CBC's 'Country Canada' satellite station, on October 3rd.

THE STILLS
(FS06) have signed a worldwide deal with Arts & Crafts Records.

Ken Stringfellow's (POSIES, R.E.M., BIG STAR) new group, THE DISCIPLINES have released the "Best Mistake"/"No Vacancy" vinyl single and download on Weekender Records in the UK.

My favorite band from Cork, Ireland are now officially London residents. THE CLASS OF 1984 just came over on the boat, and they could use some friends in the big city, so look them up. This was taken from their blog:
"were here. clueless. newham. dock area. drunken sailors and early houses. fog horns and harlots. welcome to London class of 1984. ferry ride was calm but we were sick all the same. its tradition i think. at the bow of the ferry, arms outstretched shouting "I'm the king of the world" until we dock in Fishguard and are laughed at in a McDonald's. well boo hoo said Boo Radley. London is bigger than we last remembered. finding a bedsit to rest our weary bones is proving to be difficult because we are penniless musicians. "no room at the inn" indeed! we appreciate all your comments lately though. we will return to the classroom quite soon so be patient 84ians. music hath such charms to soothe the savage beast and soothe we shall. very soon. now i am off for a pint of bitter"
They should have some London shows lined up as soon as they find a couch to sleep on.

Finally, KUDU is heading over to Sweden with ROXY COTTONTAIL to play dates in Stockholm, Gotenburg, and some other city I can't pronounce on Sept 13, 14 & 15.

FUTURE SOUNDS 29 RELEASED THIS WEEK

1. SAM SPARRO – BLACK & GOLD
The debut single for LA’s electro-funk phenomenon, SAM SPARRO delivers this year’s contender to GNARLS BARKLEY’s ‘Crazy’ with his soulful track, ‘Black & Gold’. Groovy, smooth, here it here first. Manager: Steven Melrose. Legal: D. Burgundy Morgan. Needs: Booking
SAM SPARRO – BLACK & GOLDMODUS VIVENDI MUSIC

2. NICO VEGA – GRAVITY
Front woman Aja Volkman of LA based, NICO VEGA, mixes Karen O with MARY LOU RETTON live. This song is actually dangerous for me when I’m driving, because it makes me want to freak out and kick my windshield out! The band will be touring on our first ever tour in October of America with SHOUT OUT LOUDS. Manager: Beau Laughlin. Needs: Booking.
NICO VEGA – DEMOS – MYSPACE RECORDS

3. VOXHAUL BROADCAST – ROTTEN APPLES
One listen to this batch of demos and you’d never guess this band was from Orange County, feels more like Manchester, England, but it’s true. With lyrics like “I need your love in my blood, so I cut off all my limbs”, what’s not to like? A band with massive amounts of potential and star power in surplus, once the new recordings are complete I guarantee their message will be well received.
Management: Steven Melrose. Legal: Dave Kostiner, Davis Shapiro.
Needs: Booking.

VOXHAUL BROADCASTDEMOS – LEFTWING RECORDS

4. THE VIRGINS – RICH GIRLS
New York City act, THE VIRGINS, sound very New York City. Street tough, rough around the edges - part RICHARD HELL and part JULIAN CASABLANCAS. I dig the ROLLING STONES-esque “Miss You” who-hoo’s in this track. Full length to drop sometime in 2008, this EP is the teaser before prom night.
Manager: Nick Stern. Booking: Jackie Nalpant.

THE VIRGINS – EP – Atlantic Records

5. FILM SCHOOL – DEAR ME
No stranger to past Future Sounds comps, the latest FILM SCHOOL CD, Hideout, drops in September and showcases a band that has evolved incredibly, yet still embraces and continues to find new ways to explore the shoegaze genre. Part MY BLOODY VALENTINE, part BAUHAUS, it’s dark and diverse and soon to be one of your favorite records of 2007. Fall touring begins in North America.
Management: Larry Little. Booking: Kevin French, BigShot (US). Ben Winchester, Primary (UK).
FILM SCHOOL – HIDEOUT – BEGGARS BANQUET

6. EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS – SINGLE SEDATIVE
I’m a fan of unique voices and challenging music, and ECC have all of it under one roof. An Los Angeles based four-piece signed to Suretone Records, the full-length, Ameritown, was released in July and it’s a complete album, track for track throughout. It’s rare to find these days an album this deep and this good. One of my favorite releases thus far this year. Tours with COLD WAR KIDS and BRMC already. Manager: Steven Melrose. Booking: Marty Diamond. Legal: Jennifer Justice. Publishing: Chrysalis
EATERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS – AMERITOWN – SURETONE RECORDS

7. BIG BLUE WHALE – 3 AGAINST ONE
For being only a two-piece, San Francisco’s BIG BLUE WHALE are a whopper and make a HUGE sound! What I like about this track is that it reminds me of a classic alternative rock tune from the early ‘90’s, something along the lines of SOUL COUGHING (Super Bon Bon) or THE OFFSPRING. Producer Alex Newport worked on the demos that are now circulating.
Needs: Management, booking, legal.
BIG BLUE WHALE – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

8. MGMT – TIME TO PRETEND
I love it when a major label signs something that’s actually, genuinely cool, so hat’s off to Columbia for locking in Brooklyn based act, MGMT. This song combines everything I love that’s happening in electronic rock at the moment with the best parts of ABBA (Come on, listen closely, you hear it too!). Singing, “this is our decision, to live fast and die young”, it’s a dancefloor anthem for everyone trying to figure out what the hell to do with the rest of their lives. Management: Mark Kates. Booking: Marty Diamond, Little Big Man. Legal: Peter Lewitt.
MGMT – ORACULAR SPECTACULAR – COLUMBIA RECORDS

9. BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB – CANCEL ON ME
This song starts off as a great tune, only to become a spectacular one if you let it play until the end. That back-end drops so soft and gentle and then explodes into fury! The BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB are actually a band (a club of sorts) from London, that won the “Road To V” competition over 2000 other bands, and have recently grabbed mentions in the NME. I need to see this song performed live. Manager: Jason Marcus, Nettwerk. UK Booking: Scott Thomas, X-Ray. Legal: Peter McGaughrin. Needs: US label, booking.
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB – THE BOY I USED TO BE – UNSIGNED

10. THE FAINTEST IDEAS – DEXTER’S GOT A SINISTER HEART
Pure indie rock at it’s finest is what ‘Dexter’s Got….” is all about. Here’s another barn burner if you let it run ‘til the end. With a dash of TELEVISION PERSONALITIES and a bit of THE ONLY ONES, this act from Gothenburg and Stockholm, Sweden should pull in fans of THE CRIBS, THE LITTLE ONES and THE WOMBATS. Needs: Management, booking, legal.
THE FAINTEST IDEASWHAT GOES UP MUST CALM DOWN – MAGIC MARKER RECORDS

11. AUDRYE SESSIONS – PORCELAIN
From the East Bay of Northern California, AUDRYE SESSIONS are no strangers to Future Sounds, and with their newly recorded full-length, Braille, it shouldn’t be long until everyone knows them. Imagine that, making an entire record that’s this good? Well supported by Live 105 in San Francisco, the band’s footprint continues to stretch. Manager: Joel Mark. Legal: Dave Kostiner, Davis Shapiro.
Needs: Booking.

AUDRYE SESSIONS – BRAILLE – UNSIGNED

12. SOMETHING ABOUT VAMPIRES & SLUTS – AIRPLANE FUEL
This one is ready to slide right onto radio, and the blatant rip of that SMITHS guitar riff makes me put it on repeat and sit and wait for that jangle (‘This Charming Man’ anyone?). SAVAS are from Myrtle Beach, SC, not from an Anne Rice novel, and they obviously love THE CURE.
Needs: Management, US booking, legal.
SOMETHING ABOUT VAMPIRES & SLUTS – PRETEND ENDINGS – NO MORE STARS RECORDS

13. AUTOVAUGHN – ONE MORE TIME
From Nashville, Tennessee, not from Las Vegas (they sounds a lot like that band), it’s AUTOVAUGHN, an act grabbing plenty of industry attention for a surplus of big tunes with hooks like this one. Play it one more time and you’ll hum it two days later. Word is that majors are looking to close ASAP on this band. Touring relentlessly this fall in the US. Management: Jason Brown, Brian Waymire. Legal: Ken Marcus. Needs: Booking.
AUTOVAUGHN – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

14. WARM BODIES – SURROUNDINGS
WARM BODIES are a five-piece from East Meadow, NY that are bringing warmth to kids all over Long Island. They have just started circulating this nine-song demo produced by Tony Bruno, and evolving their touring footprint throughout the East coast. For fans of KEANE and MUTE MATH.
Manager: Ryan Ruden. Needs: Booking, legal.
WARM BODIES – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

15. CHERRY TEMPO – IN HINDSIGHT I KNOW
Albuquerque, New Mexico’s CHERRY TEMPO delivers this edition’s ‘butter track’. I’m not sure if one female I’ve played this for hasn’t immediately responded with pleasure, yet. Their second record is in post-production and will be looking for a home for release this fall.
Needs: Management, booking, legal.
CHERRY TEMPO – CHERRY TEMPO – UNSIGNED

OTHER ARTISTS TO WATCH:

WHITE DENIM - TRACK: MESS YOUR HAIR
Incredible band form Austin, part 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS, part BUTTHOLE SURFERS. Making waves, soon to be everywhere, an AMAZING band! Unsigned.

SABROSA PURR - TRACK: KILLING THE ARIES
This LA band, in my opinion, should be HUGE. Mix the best of JANES ADDICTION with the greatest screamer in the business in Will Love, and you have the Purrrrrr. Unsigned.

THIEVES LIKE US - TRACK: DRUGS IN MY BODY
If I were still active on the DJ circuit, this track would be a staple in every set I might spin. An anthem about being young and dumb and having minimal credit card debt. New York, NY. Album: Play Music For You. Kitsune Records.

CALVIN HARRIS – TRACK: THE GIRLS
The party hit of the fall perhaps? 23 year old CALVIN HARRIS’ ‘The Girls’ has already gone Top 10 in the UK, now it crosses the waters and heads straight at us, complete with Calvin naming all the kind of ladies that he “gets”.
Album: I Created Disco, Almost Gold Recordings.

CHESTER FRENCH - TRACK: SHE LOVES EVERYBODY
You may have heard this track close an episode of Entourage, well others did too, and they’ve been recently signed to Star Track Records/Interscope (founded by THE NEPTUNES' Pharell Williams & Chad Hugo). Harvard students make smart music.

BELLAVISTA - TRACK: RIVER OF LUST
I was delighted that members of a great band, VUE, have formed a new project in San Francisco > BELLAVISTA. For fans of BRMC and SPACEMAN 3.
Amazing debut record, Bellavista, on Take Root Records.

CLASS OF 1984 - TRACK: HONEY
Cork, Ireland’s CLASS OF 1984 are getting looks from the NME and UK majors off this demo track. The band has moved to London to become the modern NEW YORK DOLLS. Unsigned.

GLASVEGAS - TRACK: IT’S ONLY MY CHEATING HEART THAT MAKES ME CRY
Scotland’s next big thing, GLASVEGAS blend THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN with
Unsigned.

CHERRY GHOST - TRACK: 4AM
An absolutely gorgeous track, reminding me of the MOBY GRAPE classic, “8:05”. From Manchester and signed to Heavenly UK.

JUKEBOX THE GHOST - TRACK: HOLD IT IN
From Washington DC, JUKEBOX THE GHOST are full of amazing hooks and harmonies and in no time should be indie favorites. Just missed making the mix. Unsigned.

SUGAR & GOLD - TRACK: NEIGHBORHOOD
San Francisco funk act SUGAR & GOLD are made strictly for the rollerskaters and fans of ROTARY CONNECTION and DUSTY GROOVES. Antenna Farm Records.

SHY CHILD - TRACK: THE VOLUME
This song is another club-thumper, and if you turn it up like it suggests, you will go deaf from the volume. New York’s SHY CHILD quietly grabs your attention. Say Hey Records (US).

ALSO BUZZING:
Cage The Elephant, Johnossi, The Avett Brothers, Ruth-Anne, Stab The Matador, Free Blood, Santogold, Kissy Sell Out, Maia Hirasawa, Black Before Red, The Runners, Shapes Have Fangs, The Black Spiders, Johnny Action Figure, Derek James, Little Red, Elizabeth & The Catapult, Look See Proof, Palladium, Miniature Tigers, David Caggiari, Some Body, The Enigma Project, Assembly Now, The Enemy, The Lines, The Sugars, Mink, Oh Julia!, Mr Fogg, Sicker Than Others, The Aviators, The Vasco Era, Paper Route, The Blacks, Meiko, Twin Thousands, The Valley Arena, Hello Wembley, Miracle Fortress, One Little Plane, The XYZ Affair.

FLASH BACK: MOTORCYCLE BOY

Living in LA, you always get the random celebrity sighting, from bumping into Bobcat Goldthwait at Ralphs, to passing the Olsen Twins hiking in Runyon Canyon, it's good for a laugh but I'm still a sucker for the rockers. Today I happened to meet Francois, the singer of MOTORCYCLE BOY, one of those late '80's/early '90's punk/glam/garage bands from Los Angeles, and got a real history lesson of the Sunset Strip and a reminder about what rock and roll is really about. MOTORCYCLE BOY had a cassette out on XXX Records called 'Popsicle' , which I'm thrilled to find out will be re-released in 2008. Think JOHNNY THUNDERS and IGGY POP and THE NEW YORK DOLLS, and you're getting close to the richness here. Until the reissue drops, check out the gems on their Myspace page. My favorites are "Feel It", which has been covered by many like the NEW BOMB TURKS or THE DISHES, and 'I Hate The Sunset Strip' which couldn't be more true today. Listen to the lyrics if you're from here, you'll love it:

I Hate the Sunset Strip "heavy metal shit" - I Hate the Sunset Strip "Orange County Chicks" - I Hate the Sunset Strip "Stupid Valley Hicks" - If you're really lucky, you get to meet the disease infested rock and roll girl of your dreams at the Rainbow!.

Brilliant.

The band is back together after 10 years and are actually playing tonight at Huntington Beach with THE VIBRATORS, yep, think 'Pure Mania'.
