NOVEMBER 15TH: WEIRD SCIENCE PARTY @ VIPER ROOM

FUTURE SOUNDS is excited to be collaborating with SPEAK AMERICAN for a new monthly event at The Viper Room that kicks off on November 15th. Headlining will be Annabella Lwin of BOW WOW WOW, plus PLUSHGUN (FS31), THE BROBECKS and a band I can't wait to see, THE NIGHTS. More details to come.....

HOCKEY SIGN TO CAPITOL RECORDS

Portland's HOCKEY, a band we can't get enough of around FSHQ, have signed to Capitol Records. Get over to their Myspace page and listen to "Too Fake" or "Song Away" and you'll see why this band was being courted by many. Seeing Hockey live is where the magic happens, it adds a dimension of the soul stomp of SAM & DAVE to the funky, white boy-ness of '70's era Mick Jagger, while somehow managing to feel very 2009. Congrats!

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: THE HEAVY & THE YELLING

Tonight you have some choices. The bad daddy of a show is taking place over at the Echo where FS favorites, THE HEAVY, do their heavy funk, nasty bass, CURTIS MAYFIELD howlin' jams with some support from another English freak, POP LEVI, who destroyed our RUMBLE party in September. THE GRAY KID handles his business as good as anyone.

Meanwhile, across town on the Sunset strip at The Roxy, the UK act WHITE LIES headlines another complete bill. We've played the hell out of their single "Death" on the FS radio show, and now's the chance to see them live in the States. I heard mixed reports on JAPANESE MOTORS live, although people chatter about them, but the band we worship here at the office, THE YELLING, hits the stage at 8PM. This young LA band could very well become a household name in the coming years as they mature into the huge potential that oozes from them.

Decisions - decisions.........

TONIGHT IN LA: DANA FALCONBERRY @ HOTEL CAFE

DANA FALCONBERRY, an Austin based artist we had the pleasure of meeting at SXSW, is in town tonight at the Hotel Cafe performing at 7pm. Give a listen to her Myspace page and it will suck you into her CD, "Oh Skies Of Grey" (00:02:59 Records) which blends country with a COCOROSIE vibe. Very memorable.

FUTURE SOUNDS DEBUTS.....

More information on bands that debuted on the FUTURE SOUNDS radio show....

COLLAPSING CITIES
FROM: Auckland, New Zealand

MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/collapsingcities
Unsigned

Four Kiwi's now living in London are starting to pop up in places like NME and have yet to fall over in the States. They've done tours with BLACK KIDS and WHITE LIES and did Reading and Leeds. Listen to "So I Said Last Weekend".

PLASTIC CARAMELO
FROM: Brooklyn, NY
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/plasticcaramelo
Colombia Records

This band popped out at me thanks to the NACOTHEQUE party in New York. They seem to be on everything on the east coast that's cool happening in latin indie rock and electronic music. Calling their style of music "Glampeta", PLASTIC CARAMELO drops some very sticky beats. < Just to clarify, that's Colombia Records, not Columbia Records.>

VETO
FROM: Copenhagen, Denmark

MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/vetosite

LABEL: Reset08 - Sony/BMG (Europe)

Found by listening to some cool online radio broadcast from central Europe, VETO grabbed my attention because track "Built To Fall" drops the hammer and combines the electronic shizz that everyone seems to be going nuts over, but also the rock. Looks like nothing is happening in the US yet.

BLACK TAXI
FROM: Brooklyn, NY

MYSPACE:
http://www.myspace.com/blacktaximusic
Unsigned

Track "Pretty Mama" is a track that's gotten into my brain and drives me mad eventually, because it's so hooky, and this looks like the kind of hit that could start on the 'cool' side of the fence before swinging over to the KROQ's eventually because it can appeal to so many different music heads. They are playing tonight at Arlene's Grocery at CMJ and I'm told the other interesting note is that one of the guys is SANTOGOLD's boyfriend. "Lights Out" indeed!

HOTPIPES
FROM: Nashville, TN

MYSPACE:
http://www.myspace.com/hotpipes
Liquid Panda Records

"Future Bolt" is for fans of THE HOLD STEADY, for fans of GUIDED BY VOICES, and could be a song on the soundtrack of 'Dazed & Confused'. This four piece from Nashville started their own label and have dropped a record that should fill them with pride. Smokin'!

LITTLE COMETS
FROM: Newcastle, UK

MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/littlecometsmusic
Unsigned

Yeah, indie rock! Newcastle's LITTLE COMETS are on the UK radar list of bands getting attention right now. Since downloading "Joanna" its been on steady rotation at the FSHQ.

AVI BUFFALO
FROM: Long Beach, CA
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/avibuffalo
Unsigned

See my blog post from Sunday about this young virtuoso.

LIKE A FOX
FROM: Philadelphia, PA
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/likeafoxband
LABEL: Transit of Venus

The Sugar Bear was at it again by sending us this new band from Philly - LIKE A FOX - that has the quirkiness of THE SHINS mixed with GRANDADDY and THE FLAMING LIPS. More great indie rock here!

STARS & SONS
FROM: Brighton, UK
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/starsandsonsuk
Unsigned

Brighton's STARS & SONS appear to be baked from the brain of a guy named Matt and filled in by his bandmates, and the EP I download for FREE (http://www.mediafire.com/?mjkaoumljgk) off their Myspace page had a number of strong songs. Keep an eye on this band.

FUTURE SOUNDS PICKS: DIOS MALOS & AVI BUFFALO

I get by with a little help from my friends, and this weekend, two friends slipped me new music by two Southern California bands that made painting the baby room a hypnotic experience.

The first album came from my good friend, El Diablo. As usual, he's right on the money and he gave me the latest release from a band I've loved since Future Sounds 12, DIOS MALOS, as they are about to release their third full-length album. They've always leaned towards THE BEACH BOYS in sound, having grown up near Hawthorne, but this release is far more "Smile" (Windchimes/Vegetables), while giving us the creaminess of 'Deserter's Song' era MERCURY REV or BEACH HOUSE or more recently the lushness of PANDA BEAR. I also got nostalgic on the opening track as it samples a scream from my childhood from my favorite Halloween LP that my parents played in our garage for our neightborhood haunted house each year to scare the trick-or-treaters. Song, "Tel Mee Theen" has the most gorgeous-George Harrison like guitar rip! This is a record of maturity, or depth and of vision. I have no idea yet when this album will be released or what it's called.

Someone else that's listened to many of these references, is the teenage AVI BUFFALO from Long Beach, California. Thanks to Jax of ROCK INSIDER for this gem! What's more impressive is after finding out how young Avi and his band are, as he started writing and recording at 10 years old, and are now only 17. I was trying to talk my parent's into letting me get my learners permit and earning some coin as a busboy at THE PUB when I was this age, not writing music that is so gentle and advanced. I received a collection of songs from various recordings, but tracks like "Truth Sets In" and "Where's Your Dirty Mind" are impressive and have me eager to see this live and have a conversation with the person behind such grand ideas.
Avi will be playing a half dozen times over the next six weeks in Southern California, with gigs on Oct 29th at The Smell, and the 30th at the Echo Curio.

THE RUMBLE LA NOVEMBER LINE UP ANNOUNCED

Our November RUMBLE party isn't one for those with a weak constitution - if you're coming, bring your earplugs and be ready for some whiskey drinking. THE YELLING are just plain loud, like ZEPPELIN going heavy, and THE BLACKS are the perfect band for the dark little booths at the 3 Of Clubs. Opening up the night is a band that I've been talking about since having my jock handed to me at SXSW in April, BIRDS & BATTERIES from San Francisco. This line up is tremendous!

The wizards of Oz for the evening our the resident DJ's, MiCHAEL.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: MEAGHAN SMITH @ THE TROUBADOUR

All the way from Halifax, Nova Scotia comes MEAGHAN SMITH tonight at The Troubadour. Although she's with the very talented ROB SEXSMITH, it's Smith that I'll be standing close to with pleasure to finally hear this incredible voice in person. I've been yappin' about her since January and the wait has seemed like two years for her to return to LA for a performance. Her full-length record on Sire is absolutely gorgeous, a throwback sound for another time completely. Remarkable.

Remember "Push Push (Lady Lightning)" from FS26? Well BANG CAMARO, the large army of a band will be playing their gasoline driven brand of rock at The Roxy tonight. Supporting them is a band I'm coming out to see, THE RINGERS. With a frontman like a wild Iggy Pop, that's entertainment.

THE TEMPER TRAP - SWEET DISPOSITION

If you can remember back to March of 2007 and Future Sounds 26, you may recall a track by the Melbourne, Australian band THE TEMPER TRAP called "My Sun". Well, it's been a year and their new album is done and getting tons of label attention, and for good cause - wait until you hear this track > "Sweet Disposition". If this isn't an international hit song, then I don't know what one is. The record is strong throughout and has songs to back this one, but it's gonna turn some heads and warm some hearts.

Here's the video for the song...

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: THE RUMBLE @ 3 OF CLUBS

Tonight, after you are finished watching the VP Debate farce, which promises to be great television, go out and celebrate that Palin is now helping our cause at THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES. For all you embarrassed Republicans out there that feel like they need to connect with the rural roots, the 3 Of Clubs is the perfect dive bar for you to drink away your sorrows. No elitists in this joint, just good beer.

Driving out from North Carolina to play tonight at 9:30pm are
THE NOISES 10, a band that's graced a number of FS compilations over the years, and tonight they'll be celebrating the release of their latest CD, produced by Eric Valentine and recorded a stone's throw from the club.

Following up will be Dave Stewart's kid,
DJANGO JAMES & THE MIDNIGHT SQUIRES. He's young in years but he has the stage presence of a cagey veteran. If you haven't heard "Givin' Tree" on my radio program or around town, nows the time to listen.

Headlining the evening is the band from Cincinnati, Ohio,
BAD VEINS. I've been looking forward to see this band live for some time and as dumb luck/timing would have it, we got to book them while they are visiting LA for shows.

Our resident DJ's,
MiCHAEL, are a couple of guys from USC that know how to throw parties and turn them out. I heard they may soon become the President and VP of the student body on campus.

It's always FREE if you RSVP here > http://www.sonicliving.com/therumble-LA
So please don't write me all afternoon about the guest list because it only takes 1 minute to RSVP. If not, $5 won't kill you at the door and you'll be helping pay the bands.

LAST NIGHT'S MY BLOODY VALENTINE SHOW IN SAN FRANCISCO

Finally seeing MY BLOODY VALENTINE play last night in San Francisco after worshiping a band and their catalog for so many years was inspirational. Although the venue, The Concourse, left much to be desired and felt like we were in a big, long barn, it couldn't hide the {{{SOUND}}} of MBV. Earplugs were simply there so that you're ears didn't just bleed in what was hands down the loudest concert I've ever been to. A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS, as loud as they are, aren't even on the same plane of noise. When I left last night I felt like I had been spanked, HARD, and that the sound was still in my bones. What I love about bands like MBV, bands that made a real impact on music, but perhaps not a commercial impact, is that it proves that people will come out and support great music, even if songs don't have traditional chorus' to sing along to, that a vibe band such as MBV can still affect so many people in such a powerful way.
