THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES CELEBRATES 1 YEAR - LINE UP ANNOUNCED

One year? Seriously? It seems like yesterday that Nico Vega and Black Gold played the first ever RUMBLE: LA party at 3 Clubs. For this night, we've hand selected three bands with bright futures to help us celebrate.

Headlining will be recent Domino Recordings signing, CHIEF from Santa Monica. This band recently crushed their Troubadour show. Psyched that these guys are jumping in for us on our one year anniversary.

Another band we've enjoyed for some time now, PRINCETON (Kanine Records), go on at 10:15pm and bring their KINKS-by-way-of-Los Angeles melodies to the party.

Opening up is a band we're dying to see live, after missing their recent Silverlake Lounge show, CHEETAHSAURUS from Ventura, California. This unsigned band has been getting plenty of spins on the FS radio show, time to see what their live chops are like. Get there early to see them.

The party is FREE and the drinks are cheap

TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO: LILOFEE @ BLOW UP

Bay area friends, tonight at the Rickshaw Stop, the Blow Up party has LILOFEE and HOT TUB, along with Frisco Disco's RICHIE PANIC. We're nearing the end of the BIG STEREO-LILOFEE remix contest, so DJ's, if you're holding out on us, get those submissions in. The winning remix of "Destroy Me" will be released on Future Sounds Records digitally with the single and the video, as well as getting a copy of REASON RECORD and a Vestalife Ladybug.

THURSDAY NIGHT IN LA: ALL WRONG & THE PLANS CHANGE & AWOLNATION

Future Sounds & RM64 are proud to present a show with a two acts that we love on Thursday night at The Viper Room. I know, the parking, don't sweat it, this will be worth it.

Headlining it's AWOLNATION, which is the latest creative expression from former UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF GIANTS (FS21) frontman, Aaron Bruno, and it's the band's first show. We've heard the early demos and it's sounding large indeed, and they are giving away an mp3 on the Myspace page.

Supporting AWOLNation is Future Sounds 33 star - ALL WRONG & THE PLANS CHANGE ("I Get Down"). I won't even try and hide my love for this four piece, just wait until you hear Kassia hit the big notes in "Whiskey Birds". You'll be a follower from then on. I'll be honest, I don't know who JINNRAIL is, but on this bill, how can you go wrong?? You can pick up a ticket for $10 on Ticketweb.

There will be an after party at On The Rox, with Nick Adler handling the DJ duties, see one of us at the show for the password.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: BAND OF SKULLS + OTHERS

If you haven't caught the mighty, mighty BAND OF SKULLS yet during their stint in the US, do it quickly before they return back to London. They have blazed a deep trail over the past two months, and John said that their Capitol Hill Block party set in Seattle last weekend was a mammoth! They play again tonight at Spaceland and you need to be there. If you haven't seen Emma play bass yet, then you'll fall in line as a disciple of the BoS!!

Also this evening, GLASVEGAS and IDA MARIA are at The Fonda, MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. are playing the Aquarium Drunkard party at The Echo, and FS33 darlings - THE NIGHTS - play The Silverlake Lounge this evening.

JUST ANNOUNCED - THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO LAUNCHES AUGUST 9TH

Now we've done it, we've slipped down to San Diego and will be opening up THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO on August 9th at THE CASBAH, and it's going to be the grand finale of the NORTH PARK MUSIC THING conference. Our first one is going to be FREE and the entertainment features some of the hottest bands in Southern California.

Coming down from Long Beach, it's THE GROWLERS. They launch their monthly residency in August at The Echo in LA, but are jumping down to help us kick off the new monthly the right way, with a band we've been obsessed with for ages. This band has a touch of magic to them, and getting them this close to the border of Mexico should bring out the best/worst in them.

Representing San Diego are two of their finest up and coming bands - APES OF WRATH and LIGHTS ON. If you have listened to our FS radio show in the last few months, you've heard us spin both of these quite a bit, so when we got our pick of the litter for SD, we knew immediately who we wanted to hit up.

The guest DJ for the night is a guy that needs to introduction in SD, GABE VEGA.

THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO will start running every month and fall on the first Saturday normally as a matinee show at The Casbah. We've teamed up with some amazing partners from San Diego like SEZIO, M-THEORY RECORDS and INDIGENOUS to bring you the best of not only San Diego, but adding another stop on the soon to be monthly Rumble tours that start in Seattle.

THE ETTES - NO HOME

I just recently came across this profile video of Poni from THE ETTES, that I had to share. If you haven't witnessed her drum playing in person and had to pick your jaw up off the floor, hopefully this will give you a glimpse of her fury. We've been enjoying their latest EP, "Danger Is" (Take Root Records) since it's arrival, and so we thought we'd share a track from it here.

NEW SOUNDS: KID A - THE SONG OF THE SUMMER

The song of the summer is "wasnotwas" by the brilliant young act, KID A out of Chesapeake, Virginia.

I'll stand behind the statement, the song has been on loop since it's arrival, when it mysteriously appeared on my desk with a yellow-post it that said "listen to this". In true Alice In Wonderland - 'Eat Me' fashion, I took the bait and fell into her fantasy land, which poetically all comes from an EP called, "
In A Dream House, We All Ride Carousels". Kid A is built around the 21 year-old singer/composer/producer Anni T, and her DJ mate, Turbo P.

Upon hearing this EP we were like hound dogs onto management, and they were kind enough to get us access to Anni T, and she took the time to answer some of our questions. The interview is below, and we'll be dropping her single, "wasnotwas" in our HOT 5 segement of the Future Sounds radio show later this afternoon on WOXY. Here's the interview......

FS: Congratulations on putting together the hottest new track I’ve heard in 2009. How did KiD A come about and how did you hook up with producer/mastermind, Dan Le Sac?

KID A: Thanks so much. It‘s really cool to have people who care about music taking an interest. It feels even more validating. KiD A came about a little while after I graduated from high school. I was previously in a band, but in 2007 I started tinkering with electronic sound and computerized music programs.

How I came to work with DLS is due to my UK-based manager, who used to do TV presenting and interviewed Dan when he was playing with Pip in Manchester. He was interested in producing some new projects and when we met, we just kind of clicked. He and his manager are really great people.

FS: After reading your bio, about your childhood jazz experiences that evolved into Brian Eno and The Cure, what contemporary influences helped you shape your sound? I mean this has the same kind of big energy that M.I.A. brings to the table.

Kid A: My first taste of contemporary electronic sound was when Daft Punk’s album Homework came out in 1996. A classic album with amazing tracks, I still listen to that album now. From there I branched out and started listening to Felix Da Housecat, Tiga, Pnau, Nujabes, Miss Kittin, CoCoRosie, Bjork and AIR. Speaking of MIA, I’ve recently been really taken with Burka Som Sistima, so they are doing a lot for me right now as well.

FS: Your press quotes seem to come from the UK and electronic magazines, while I get why the electro crowds get it – this is a club banger no doubt -have you performed in the UK yet?

Kid A: I have been pleasantly surprised with the variety of interest shown in my debut single, from electro press, to getting kudos from some more highbrow press with The Sunday Times. Since I’ve never put something out before, it has definitely been untested water for me. I had the chance to play Europe earlier this year. A festival called Nuits Sonores helped me get over to France and the UK. I played for Kruger Magazine in London and the NS festival in France, which is where I shared a stage with Danger, which was truly amazing. I still can’t believe I was there.

FS: Do you still live in Chesapeake, Virginia?

Kid A: Yeah, that’s home from me. But, I’m also currently a student, so most of my term time is spent in Roanoke, Virginia. This is great because that’s where the other half of KiD A lives (DJ Turbo P) so it makes it a lot easier to get shows, which we are in the middle of doing right now.

FS: What’s the plan for Kid A? Will the Lab be releasing a full-length? What’s the timing?

Kid A: At the moment the plan for KiD A is to play a lot of local shows to really get to know our local fanbase. Then, hopefully play some bigger support shows later in the year, which could coincide with the EP release. The full length itself is currently in discussions with a hand full of labels in the UK. The Lab has been so free in how we approach this single and I’ve been really taken with the calibre of the labels I’ve been in touch with so far. I would love to get the EP out by the end of the year, but I also want to take my time and do it right. It definitely excites me to know that listeners who have heard bits and pieces of it are really anxious for a release.

FS: Is there a live element to Kid A? A backing band?

Kid A: Yeah, this is where Turbo P really comes in. He is a DJ I met in Roanoke and is really doing well for himself in his own right. We started out with a side project called CINEMAX, but that started to spill over into KiD A, and he is now an integral part of KiD A. We are trying to keep the live side as simple as possible for right now, so we can afford to get as many live shows under our belt, but in the future I would love to have a full band behind me as well. Although when I was in France I had Spitzer backing me, and that was amazing. There is something so romantic about France. Lyon especially.

FS: Future Sounds is all about blowing up the next Kid A, what artists that you admire that no one knows about yet can you share with the world?

Kid A: I love hearing new music, and some artists/bands that really stick out to me are: Ariel Pink/ Haunted Graffiti, ZOMBY, Micachu and The Shapes, Eternal Summers, Esser, Danger, Hot Lava, Red Clay River, OURLIVES, Delphic, Spitzer, We have band, Kid British, The Great Nostalgic, Leif (DJ from NYC), Granufunk, The Bastards of Fate and Way Shape or Form.

All of these artists deserve the best. I really enjoy what they're doing, and I may have the opportunity to work with some of them in the coming months.

Also, back in Roanoke there’s a great DIY mentality that has created a group of local artists who work under The Magic Twig Community.

Thanks again to management and Anni T for the music and the time.

NEW SOUNDS: MINI MANSIONS

One of the newest Los Angeles based acts that have me coming back for more are MINI MANSIONS. It's a three piece made up of that just Zach Dawes, Tyler Parkford and Michael Shuman (yep, that one, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE/WIRES ON FIRE) that just scored the AUTOLUX tour in September. All I needed to hear was the Lennon-esque sounds of "Magik Marker" and I was in. Next local show is on July 30th at the Bootleg Theater with CHIEF and MICHAEL RUNION (another act worth noting).

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: MOVE PREMIERE OF DEAD GIRL

Tonight at midnight ONLY, the LA premiere of DEAD GIRL will be shown at Nuart Theater in West Hollywood. We got to work on some of the music selection for the film so we got the treat of watching this film through all the various stages and I can't wait to see the final.

Dead Girl will stay with you for a long time. It's like staring into the sun for too long, it will be there with you, tracers, always. When I first saw it I wasn't sure I liked it, in fact, I wasn't even sure how to feel about it. This movie is wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Imagine if you were a horny high schooler and you ditch school with your buddy, get drunk, and then mess around in an old psych hospital that has been closed for decades. Your exploring the place and you're taking part in a fair deal of vandalism, and you suddenly find a room where you discover a dead girl (naked) on a table. But wait, although chained to a table, she moves and actually responds to you.....you can see where this is going, but just about when you think you know where this film is going, it gets even stranger. There are some scenes in Dead Girl that made me feel like that one episode of Six Feet Under when David gets kidnapped, and for those of you that remember that episode you'll never forget it and you can relate to this shock. I can without a doubt say that you will never forget this movie. Controversial indeed.

The Nuart Theater is located at 11272 Sana Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. Midnight showtime.

JUST ANNOUNCED - THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO LINE UP FOR AUGUST

We have a screamer on our hands at the August THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO @ Harlot. Coming in from Chicago we have COMPANY OF THIEVES playing a mini-set and local buzz act, A B & THE SEA, plus guest DJ Aaron Axelsen (Popscene, Live 105).

From the moment I heard COT's frontwoman, Genevieve Schatz
's voice I was hooked. Then after seeing the Rushmore-inspired video for "Oscar Wilde" (see below), the hook was buried deep.

With their track, "Suzie", San Francisco's A B & THE SEA have become a regular to 'The Hot 5' on the Future Sounds radio show. We understand that these amazing demos we received were produced by Chris from THE MORNING BENDERS, which only adds to our devotion.

As always, the mighty Bagel Ted of BAGEL RADIO holds it down as our resident DJ, and we'll have drink specials and giveaways, plus more copies of FS33.

NEW RELEASE: THE FINAL EP FROM THE BLACKS

Normally I long for a band I love to drop their next release, but it's with some sadness that I rally around this one by THE BLACKS. 'Tiger Songs' (Tricycle Records), which turns out to be the swan songs by The Blacks, is the perfect reflection of life and how bittersweet it can be; for even in something as horrid as a world without the Blacks, they still leave behind this record of beauty and ugliness and fun and mischief. Luisa howls on 'Gravitas' and the track pulses like a strobe light in a dark room. Long live The Blacks!!

THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS TONIGHT @ SPACELAND

Tonight's show at Spaceland is a Future Sounds overload. Portland's THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS, part of the FS family, play tonight with former FS alumnus ILLINOIS (FS23) and EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS (FS29). If you haven't experienced the sounds of TB&TB, but you tend to be a fan of TOM WAITS or HBO's DEADWOOD or CARNIVALE, then this is right up your tin pan alley. It's like personally falling into The Grapes of Wrath if it were a movie made by David Lynch. They just released the video to one of my favorite tracks on their "Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well" album, and we've included it below for "Golden & Green". Doors are at 8:30pm.

VIDEO: O. CHILDREN "DEAD DISCO DANCER"

Here's the video to "Dead Disco Dancer" by the UK act, O. CHILDREN, a song we premiered earlier today on the FS radio show. It's right up your alley if you're into NICK CAVE or THE HORRORS. This track is addictive after you spin it a few times and come on, just look at this band photo, what's not to love? Also anyone watch TRUE BLOOD? Is that dancer in the video really the horned beast from the show? We are intrigued to say the very least, now we need to get them to play our forthcoming RUMBLE: LONDON party.

FREE FILM SCHOOL DOWNLOAD FROM LOVE & ROCKETS TRIBUTE RECORD

Anyone that's been a FS reader over the years knows my undying love for the band FILM SCHOOL. I still believe their last effort, Hideout, was one of the biggest overlooked records to come out last year, but like 'ol G W. Bush, time will be the judge of history. The band is in LA now working on their next record which I'm told is sounding amazing, but if this single, "An American Dream" (from the epic 'Express' album) that is on the New Tales To Tell: A Tribute To Love And Rockets is any indication of how sonic it will be, then put your hard hat on and get ready. Big thanks to Christopher The Minister, the mastermind behind this incredible compilation, for letting us leak out this mp3 to the people. The digital release on this is July 28th, physical is on August 18th.

AUDRA MAE SIGNS TO SIDEONEDUMMY RECORDS

Congratulations goes out to little miss AUDRA MAE for signing to SideOneDummy Records! Thanks to our buds over at RM64, they turned us onto Audra and had her play the Rumble: LA party last week and she absolutely floored us with a voice as big as promised. At one point in her 3 Clubs set, as the crowd was completely wrapped around her finger, I realized that we could be seeing her in a year or two playing the Hollywood Bowl with Ray LaMontagne. Her DOLLY PARTON personality spills over and invites you in and then that enormous voice, a true gift/talent, shuts the door on you for good.

VIDEO: OTHER GIRLS "HEY FELLA, YA FELL"

Our new favorite band from Cleveland, OTHER GIRLS, have put together this High Fidelity meets MTV in the '80's music video for "Hey Fella, Ya Fell", a song we debuted a few weeks back on the radio show but keeps growing on us by the day. More good news, they are supporting THE VEILS at Spaceland on July 15th.
Thanks to the Diablo for the video...

NEW RELEASES: EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS + STELLASTARR

The band that's become a phenomenon in Los Angeles, EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS, have dropped their debut album, "Up From Below" (Community Music) today on Itunes digitally. This band has taken it's time, built an amazing live show, built a rabid following and is now releasing their music - up from below - from the underground to the masses. There's some serious civic pride in this band!

Here's a video clip from the track, "Desert Song" from their debut record.

Also dropping today is an old FS favorite from way way back on FS03 (Remember "Somewhere Across Forever"?)- STELLASTARR* - with "Civilized". We've only heard a couple of tracks so far and it's a return to their former glory days. They're hitting the road on a US tour starting on the 18th in Boston.
